Cabelcons unique plastics
With 20 years of connector development Corning
Cabelcon has a broad experience in developing
and testing materials. Therefore our design
engineers play an important role in the
maintenance and development of international
standards for coaxial connectors at the IEC
(International Electro-technical Commission). We
are aware of the fact that new materials and new
tasks make development a standing challenge to
the connector market.
The use of plastics is one example. We have
explored many different kinds of plastics for
the Cabelcon connectors in order to make each
part perform the very best in all kinds of evironmental conditions, to make the connector
easy and secure to install, to use materials,
that are environmentally safe and to reduce the
use of materials when possible.
The specific combination of plastic is therefore
specifically determined by each function. Does
the part have to work as a support sleeve, as a
stop, as an actuator or as an insulator - and
what role does it play in the assembling
process?
The properties of the plastics have been tested
regarding to the hardness and elasticity,
friction and water absorption, ozone resistance,
electrical characteristics and temperature
stability |

COC -
Insulators
COC is a strong
material, stable to temperature fluctuations and with no flexibility. Our
composite is patent pending and is used for insulators in the new Cx4
connectors.
The insulator has
to absorb the axial force from the actuator. For this task COC is suitable
due to the hardness and form stability. The rigidity of the material
ensures that the inner conductor is always positioned in the center of the
connector. This secures the correct installation and the correct impedance
even under extreme changes in temperature.
COC is also widely
used in the medical- and food industry among other criteria because of the
shape stability under varying temperatures.

EPDM (ethylene-propylene)
- O-rings
The choice of
material for the O-rings is based on the demand for workability of the
sealing under extreme climatic actions and the demand for resistance to
wind and weather, bases, acids and ozone.
Corning Cabelcon
uses EPDM O-rings, because this material meets these demands better than
any other known material.
The
characteristics for EPDM are high flexibility and a very good resistance
to climatic changes, to ozone and to UV-radiation. And the EPDM does not
harden when exposed to water.
EPDM is
also used for military applications and in the automobile industry, where
resistance to wind, weather, salt and dirt is a crucial factor.

POM -
Insert for Cx3 Compression Connectors
Pom is a strong
material, stable to temperature fluctuations and it is flexible. And
because the material has been supplied with UV stabilizer, it is resistant
to UV radiation and has prolonged its lifetime by a factor 10.
For compression
connectors the ability to be formed by cables with big support is a great
advantage, as it gives a stronger connection with optimal contact to the
cable.
The flexibility
also means that the connector tolerates cables with varying dimensions.
This again means fewer connectors to cover a larger range of cables.

PP with GF -
Support Sleeves and Actuators for Cx4 Connectors
We have been
experimenting with PP combined with glass and we discovered a combination
of these materials that does not absorb water. It is form stable, yet with
an elasticity and flexibility, that allows tolerances on the cable.
The chemically
added glass enables the material to reach a high rigidity and elasticity
and a low crimping percentage under pressure at relative high temperatures:
Our composite tolerates yearlong working temperatures up to 140° deg. C at
a constant high pressure.
Corning Cabelcon
has patented several of the above-described materials for use in
connectors. The new Cx4 is an example of, how the right choice of plastics
can improve the ease and precision of the installation - and subsequently
secure a stable performance over many years under extreme climatic
conditions.
